St Giles, Chetton
St Giles, Chetton
A very warm welcome awaits in this lovely church of St Giles in Chetton. It is a very active and hospitable church in the heart of the village, known for regular social events including community meals and the famous monthly ‘Breakfast at the Down Inn’. There is a newly formed and enthusiastic bellringing team, who ring us into our services. Services are generally held twice a month as well as special life events and a real pony for Palm Sunday each year.
St Giles is of Saxon origin, but the present church is much later. The oldest part is the chancel which dates from the late 13th or early 14th century, as well as a medieval font.
The tower houses six bells (a treble, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and a tenor) cast in 1827 except the 4th re-cast in 1938. The inscriptions on the bells are:
-
Treble – Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts
-
2nd – Heaven and Earth are full of Thy glory
-
3rd – Glory be to Thee, O Lord on high
-
4th – King of Kings and Lord of Lords
-
5th – I will extol Thee, my God and King
-
Tenor – I will praise Thy name for ever and ever
Much restoration and replacement of stained-glass windows is thanks to the Purton family of Faintree, Lady Godiva, known for the legend of her ride through Coventry, is believed to have had a Saxon manor at Chetton where a medieval preaching cross within the churchyard is associated with her.
